In the films, the dwarves are all short, hairy, and crusty, but they have great variety in their faces, beards, clothing, body types, personalities and weaponry. Gimli at one point plays with this where he tells Éowyn stories of his entire race being this trope, which he thinks is utterly ridiculous. The constant warfare after the fall of Khazad-dûm didn't help. Dying Race: Dwarves have an abysmally low birth rate due to men outnumbering women three to one, and the women's frequent unwillingness to take a husband.

Small like Hobbits but physically much tougher than nearly any other Free Peoples, except maybe the Ents. One reason that Dain would be given rule over the Lonely mountain would be that Fili would have very little experience in ruling the dwarves.Great craftsmen who live in mines and palaces under the Earth. Though I believe the confusion is that both Fili and Kili "had fallen defending him with shield and body" making there no need for Tolkien to inform us of what happened if they lived. Since Thorin has no children, Fili, being Thorin's sister's oldest son, would be the heir. Ought we rephrase the article so as not to state it positively? However, it could be implied from the ordering of sentences like this: "There fell also Fíli and Kíli, his sister-sons. But you're right in that Tolkien never explicitly said so. I think it's a fair assumption that Fili was Thorin's heir. Does anyone have more information on this than I do?
It is possible that in Dwarf culture the succession could not pass through the female line (Dis), and thus Fili would not be his uncle's heir, though he is closest of kin. I do not recall any such statement anywhere in the legendarium, though Tolkien refers to Dain Ironfoot as Thorin's heir. On the Fili page it states that he is Thorin's heir and should become King under the Mountain after his uncle's death. Tolkien Gateway > Forums > Fili-future King under the Mountain?
